My goal is to understand how disease and age related changes in resistance arteries contribute to the development of hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. My focus in on the human vasculature and to reach my goal I study the pharmacology, molecular biology, histology and biophysical properties of isolated resistance arteries from diseased patients and where required, experimental animal models. Applied techniques include functional fluorescence microscopy, spectroscopy and lifetime imaging on vital tissues, classical myography and biomechanical testing, histological techniques and immunohistochemistry.
I have been associated with the MEMPHYS Center for Biomembrane Physics since 2005 when I started my PhD.
I am appointed as assistant professor at the Dept. of Cardiovascular and Renal Research, Institute of Molecular Medicine, SDU.
I was enrolled as student at Odense University in September 1997. After three years of studies I started on my B.Sc. project in the Susanne Mandrup group in February 2000. This project focused in evaluating the effect of different kinases on PPAR transactivation. I continued with two individual experimental activities, one was a continuation of the B.Sc. project where I further investigated the transactivation activity of PPAR subdomains under different stimuli. The other project was the start of many years of research: I started culturing mouse embryonic stem cells and generated the cells for the ACBP knockout mice (conventional and conditional knockouts).
My M.Sc. project was initiated during 2001-2002 with phenotype analyses of the ACBP knockout mice and development of the strains for conditional targeting (cre-lox system) of the ACBP gene in vivo. I was granted a novo scholar stipend in 2003 and in addition, I prolonged my MSc with another year, employed as research assistant. I obtained my M.Sc. degree in 2005. Immediately after, I started my Ph.D in biophysics, now focusing in the skin phenotype of the ACBP knockout mice. The PhD project was a highly interdisciplinary project combining research techniques and knowledge from molecular biology, physics, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology a.o. in order to understand the complex phenotype of a mouse model. This provided me a lot of skills scientifically, but also in terms of project management and coordination of collaborations.

After my PhD I worked as postdoc for approx. 2 years in the Membrane Biophysics and Biophotonics Group, headed by prof. Luis A. Bagatolli. During this period I improved my skills in advanced fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy doing a project in collaboration with Unilever R&D. Quantitative data were obtained on human skin tissue biopsies in order to explore the effect of different surface active compounds on the physical parameters and the structure of the skin.
Following half a year outside the university taking courses in project management among others, I started a postdoc in the Medical Molecular Pharmacology group headed by prof. Jo De Mey at the Institute of Molecular Medicine, Dept. of Cardiovascular and Renal Research, SDU. My main focus during 2013-2014 was to establish imaging of structural and functional characteristics of resistance arteries. Along with this came studies of microvascular mechanics and increased collaborations with the Odense University Hospital.
April 1st, 2015 I was appointed assistant professor at the Institute of Molecular Medicine, Dept. of Cardiovascular and Renal Research, SDU. My research line is focused on the microarchitecture of (resistance)arteries in cardiovascular diseases and the influence of advanced glycation end products on arterial mechanics and functional responses.
